Przyznam się, że moja pierwsza reakcja na tytuł
albumu była nieco sceptyczna. Nie żebym był zwolennikiem jakiegoś
określonego decorum, które zostało nim naruszone, ale... Na
szczęście zawartość albumu wywołuje zupełnie inne wrażenia.
Pierwsze z nich to - "To musi być Szwecja!" Nie wiem
co to jest, ale formacje z tego kraju - począwszy od hałaśliwego
BDN poprzez mroczną MEGAPTERĘ aż do minimalistycznego ARCHON
SATANI (i są to tylko czubki wielkich gór) mają w sobie jakiś
wspólny element, który przebija z ich muzyki nawet pomimo rozbieżnych
estetyk. Drugie spostrzeżenie dotyczyło konstrukcji samej muzyki.
NO FESTIVAL OF LIGHT niezwykle umiejętnie łączą mroczne, elektroniczne
podkłady z całym bogactwem sampli, nagrań z terenu, głosów,
rytmicznych stukotów, a nawet okazjonalnych wycieczek w bardziej
zgrzytające tereny. Wszystkie one sprawiają, iż muzyka na "If
God Lived On Earth" nie tyle pulsuje powolnym, statycznym
mrokiem, co żyje i wije się niczym zamieszkujący w ciemnościach
wąż. Po trzecie, niejako w opozycji do poprzedniego i pomimo
wspomnianej różnorodności środków, cały materiał wydaje się
wyjątkowo spójny i przemyślany. Z jednej więc strony otrzymujemy
muzykę, która nie usypia swoją jednostajnością a z drugiej absorbuje
całą uwagę słuchacza swoimi czarnymi, nihilistycznymi wizjami.

Noises... sounds... a repetitive voice: "The greatest trick,
the greatest trick". An atmospheric airy sound in the backround...
And that same repetitive voice: "the greatest trick didn't
exist, the greatest trick didn't exist". That was a desription
of the first track of Swedish ambient/industrial act No Festival
Of Light's latest album. I'm not a big fan of the genre, and
I must admit that the only feeling this "music" gives
me is boredom. The next track, "7405926" isn't much
better. The same airy sound in the background, occasional noises,
no structure, no melody, nothing that attracts my attention,
until suddenly after almost four minutes; drums, mouth harp
and some dark, melodic atmospheres. But then, after about a
minute of what could have been the start of an interesting album,
a buzzing sound takes over, and the track continues for five
minutes in a buzz of uninteresting noise. Boring! Next track,
"Onomako Brush", contains some flute-sounding stuff
and drums which help create a dark atmosphere in the start of
the the track, but then it's starting to build itself up. There
are two minutes of monotonous drums before
a new sample is introduced and used in a repetitive and completely
boring way.
Man, this is so boring
my stomach hurts! The next tracks are not a bit better than
the first ones. If you like simple, repetitive industrial "music"
with only a couple of cool samples (like the gregorian chants
in "Day Of Wrath") you could check out No Festival
Of Light's album. Otherwise, you could check out industrial/ambient
bands with melody and atmosphere like Puissance and Umbra. To
me, No Festival Of Light is just about as fun as waiting at
the dentist's office.
