I ended up totally blank after the first listen
of "Structure of Minds". I couldn't recall a single
song, not even parts of one. Thinking it would have something
to do with it being fresh for me, I played it again. And again.
With the same strange result. The mostly laid-back compositions
are supposed to be influenced by Biosphere and Aphex Twin and
some of Simply Dead's tracks are reminiscent of them, but lacking
the skill to bring about that unmistakable gut feeling. As a
soundtrack before going to sleep this works, but in this case
it's not a great compliment. Simply Dead are somewhat innovative
in the use of occasional vocals, but it's no big help here.
They are also something as unusual as a Swedish band on a Polish
label. I find nothing to get intrigued by on "Structure
of Minds". The music's simply dead.

Zanim przejdę do samej płyty, oficjalne dementi - SIMPLY DEAD'S
to nie projekt IN SLAUGHTER NATIVES, bo taka wersja krąży po
niektórych media. No i już. A jaki jest album? Ładny. Bardzo
ładny, ale nie "ładny" bo nie "piękny",
ale "ładny" bo ujmujący w taki jakiś prosty sposób.
Kiedyś Avantgarde Music synestezyjnie reklamowała swoją muzykę
jako posiadającą czerwone brzegi. "Structure of Minds"
jest pomarańczowa. Pomarańczowa i rozleniwiona. Pulsacje basu
i mniej lub bardziej zagęszczone pogubione beaty są tu poprzylepiane
do nastrojowego, zadumanego podłoża, które raz szumi ciszą,
kiedy indziej nieskomplikowaną melodią, a jeszcze gdzieś dronowatymi
pomrukami. W niektórych utworach pojawiają się nawet wokale
i sample z jakichś filmów - jeden z nich chyba o jakichś sektach,
ale nie są one w stanie rozbić spowolnionego obiegu dźwięku.
Momentami pachnie tu takim bardziej zadumanym bristolskim brzmieniem,
momentami Coilem (a może to tylko moja paranoja na punkcie Anglików?),
ale przez większość czasu taką spokojną, prywatną muzyką, która
nigdy nie odniesie wielkiego sukcesu (i dobrze) ale za to w
chłodniejsze wieczory rozpali w okolicach głośników małe pomarańczowe
słoneczko. Czyżby kolejny album na jesień?

FLUXEUROPA
Simply Dead's Structure of Minds (1999 dragon 010) sadly isn't
an industrial tribute to Mick Hucknell's ensemble. Instead it's
a blend of ethereal-electronic-ambient-industrial. On the opener
some of the female vocals sound rather like Bjork but unfortunately
some of the male vocals sound like Stephen Hawkin. Having said
that there's not much wrong here for most of it. It's quite
chilled out and Orb-like, and its spaceage sound really is aided
by some of the Sci-Fi movie samples. There seems to be no track
listing with this promo. The best of the tracks is number eight
which sounds a bit like early Human League.
